Break-up

During 1968 there were student protest movements, and the Beatles started their role as leaders of the youth culture. Taking those Abbey Roadissues the putting them into their music. They continued many more years to record and release new music and maintained a level of popularity. They launched their own record label, Apple. The following year Abbey Road became one of the band’s best-loved and biggest-selling albums.

However personal disagreements and stress had started to tear the band apart. After Lennon and McCartney began arguing things went downward. In the spring of 1970 the Beatles disbanded. All four members went on to produce solo albums, none as popular when they were the Beatles. Lennon released sets of songs with his new wife, Yoko Ono. McCartney went on to form a band, Wings. Starr and Harrison had done some solo work as well. Roof Top Concert

In 1980 Lennon was murdered outside the Dakota, an apartment building in New York City. The event caused an outpouring of grief. Lennon is memorialized in Strawberry Fields, part of Central Park, that Yoko Ono landscaped.

The remaining former Beatles continued to record and perform as solo artists. McCartney was the most musically active. In 1991 he completed Liverpool Oratorio; 1997 Standing Stone; and in 1999 he released Working Classical. McCartney was knighted by the queen of England in 1997. Starr began touring with his All-Star Band. Harrison recorded with Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, and Roy Orbison, in a group called the Traveling Wilburys. Harrison survived a knife attack at his home in 1999 and then died from cancer in 2001.

The Beatles were placed in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988, Lennon (1994), McCartney (1999), and Harrison (2004) were also. In September 2009, a digitally remastered version of the Beatles' entire catalog and a music game Rock Band were released. Recently a movie Nowhere Boy about the life of John Lennon was released.
